1) Define linear programming problem in general terms?
Ans: Linear programming is a mathematical technique for determining the optimum allocation of
resources and obtaining a particular objective when there are alternative uses of resources.
The objective in resource allocation may be cost minimization or profit maximization.
The technique of linear programming is applicable to problems in which the total effectiveness can be
expressed as a linear function of individual allocations and the limitations on resources linear equalities
or inequalities of the individual allocations.
2) What is feasibility region?
Ans: A point is feasible if it satisfies all constraints, the feasible region is the set of all feasible points. A
mathematical program is feasible if its feasible region is not empty.
3) Write 2 applications of linear programming?
Ans: a) Development of a production schedule by minimizing total production and inventory costs to
satisfy future demands of for a company’s product.
b) Selection of a product mix which maximizes the profits of the firm, subject to several production,
material, marketing, personnel and financial constraints.
4) What is meant by dual in Linear Programming Problem?
Ans: Corresponding to every given linear programming problem, there is another associated linear
programming problem, called dual. Primal and Dual for a given problem are replicas of each other, the
difference being that primal is a maximization problem , the dual would be a minimization problem or
vice versa.
