A SUMMARY OF THE NEW HOMONORMATIVITY 2
A summary of “The New Homonormativity
The International Gay Movement(IGM) is an online platform that aims to forge a new
gay mainstream by ensuring that the conservatives’ views on homosexuality are eliminated.
Additionally, it aims to help members of the gay community gain civil and social rights in
public (Castronovo & Nelson, 2002). The IGM hopes to shore up the strength of
neoliberalism concerning critics of the gay community by ensuring that gays have equal
rights and doing away with policies that work within the substructure of neoliberal politics.
Furthermore, the IGM aims to push neoliberal consensus towards libertarian homosexual
politics and distance it with politically attractive antigay alternatives.
Therefore, the new homonormativity is the new liberal sexual politics of the IGM that
supports heterosexual dominance assumptions while promising the possibility of a
demobilized homosexual community and a privatized, depoliticized gay culture anchored in
domesticity and consumption. The IGM writers address these political views through a
double-voiced podcast to an imaginary gay public and the national mainstream of
neoliberalism. Further, the talk aims to attract the target audience into political noticeability
through rhetorical mapping of public/personal constraints that diminish homosexual public
circles and reassess gay impartiality against the civil rights agenda and liberationism.
Consequently, in the 1970s the gay liberation contested the meaning of public and
private relating to democratic and self-governing parts in personal life. However, they later
shifted their emphasis towards public visibility and publicity. Emphasizing that gays had a
right to be publicly protected and be seen. However, antigay organizations changed their
strategies and agreed that gays should have a right to privacy but were against the public
visibility and publicity claims.
