Week 2; Case Study - “Starbucks Structure”
For this assignment we were required to review the case study titled “Starbucks’ Structure”
found in Chapter 3 of our The five functions of effective management text. We are required to
write a paper that answers the four case questions of 1. Complete a job description and job
specification for a Starbucks employee. 2. What form of departmentalization should Starbucks
use? Should the form be changed in stores offering food products and lunch? Why or why not? 3.
When the company began to experience financial problems, should the leadership try to
centralize power and decision-making or decentralize the operation? 4. What form of
organizational configuration best fits Starbucks? Before you can address the case study questions
you need to get a little background on the company.
What do you think of when someone says the word “coffee”?
When someone says the word “coffee” the first image that comes to my mind is of the twin-
tailed siren which is the logo for Starbucks Coffee. Starbucks started its operations in 1971 in
Seattle’s Pike Place Markets, Washington. Originally, they were known by the name of Starbucks
Coffee, Tea and Spice but later their name changed to Starbucks Coffee Company. This is a
worldwide known company and a leading retailer of specialty coffee market. It offers quality
coffee that produces environmental, social, and economic benefits. They offer the best
handcrafted beverages, roasted coffee, excellent service and innovation and coffee experience

2011). Basically, Starbucks aim to provide ultimate coffee satisfaction not only to its customers
but also to its partners, shareholders, employees and its neighborhoods. They focus on offering

the case study i.e. “Complete a job description and job specification for a Starbucks employee.”

store again if he had a great experience with the store staff earlier. In addition, the customer will
probably tell others also about his experience which is similar to free promotion for the company.
But in case of negative experience, this will prove to be worse for it. Thus, it is crucial for every
company including Starbucks to hire and recruit right people. It is all the more important to
attract and retain potentially capable employees. Only those candidates must be selected which
are qualified for the position offered and best fit with the organizational requirements. It also
helps in catching the attention of talented employees. And for this purpose, a concrete job design
needs to be constructed.
A job design is a document where in the takes required to be done as identified by the managers
are listed. This document also answers questions regarding who will do those tasks along with
the selection criteria that will be employed for choosing employees and placing them on specific
jobs. There are basic three steps involved in job design: (a) job analysis, (b) job description, and
(c) job specification (Reilly, Minnick & Baack, 2011). Job analysis is the “process of assigning
tasks to jobs” (Reilly, Minnick & Baack, 2011). The information collected form the job analysis
is also used by the managers for preparing a job description which outlines the responsibilities
and the duties associated with a particular position giving job specification. Job specification, on
