Introduction
The human services profession is aimed at assisting people and organizations to operate
and perform at an optimal level. In essence, these professionals help individuals, families, and
members of particular groups and communities to redefine and enhance their capacity to function
properly both as an individual and in the society. Besides, they play a major role in helping
individuals and organizations to attain maximum efficiency through the implementation of
services and interventions that facilitate peak performance. This implies that a human service
professional requires a set of skills and knowledge to help him understand the needs of other
people, both individually and within a group setting.
A career in the human services profession requires that an individual attains knowledge
and skills on numerous factors that affect human behavior. It is also important that the worker is
familiar with the human development, how society and culture affect and determines human
behavior and the role and influence of economic structures and status on human behavior. This
enhances the worker's ability to deal with multiple duties and roles that are intended to generate
optimal patterns and behaviors for the people or communities within which he/she serves. A
worker’s competence is evaluated through an examination of their understanding of the human
support systems, knowledge on the conditions relevant for the high functioning of the human
systems, ability to identify the necessary interventions when bringing about the high
functionality of the human systems, and their ability to have a distinct strategy to analyze and
implement the effectiveness of interventions, consistency in the application of the required
