In their discussion of building a strategic network, Hill and Lineback present three types of
networks. Your assignment is to critically consider your personal network and discuss your
strengths, weaknesses, and network building goals in relation to each of Hill and Lineback’s
three network types.
There are three types of networks, according to Hill and Lineback: operational networks,
developmental networks, and strategic networks. All of these networks are highly beneficial for
leaders and managers to be a part of. While we may readily form operational and development
networks through our day-to-day jobs and social interactions, establishing and maintaining
strategic networks takes time and effort on our part. This type of network is necessary for leaders
because they are continuously looking forward and being proactive about what may happen is a
crucial component of being a good manager.
Obviously, the first network I'd want to look at is my operating network. This network is
made up of individuals that provide me and my company with the resources we need to do our
everyday responsibilities. I believe I thrive in this field. I work a lot, and as a result, I develop
several relationships with people on my team. I make an effort to be kind to everyone and to
push those around me to achieve their best. This network is critical for me because I deal with
high school students. Maintaining this network enables them to remain engaged and focused on
the task at hand.
My development network is the next network on the list of networks. Those who are a
part of my support network are people in whom I have faith and who I can turn to for a
sympathetic ear and direction when I need it. What I've learned about this network is that it
may be able to function in a single direction. I find myself in situations when team members
