The Controversial Concussion Rule in Football
The concussion injury rule has remained controversial in the football arena for decades.
Arguments and opinions are contradicting from the athletes perceiving the football concussion
ruining the beautiful game to athletes who advocate for the permanent banning of tackling in
football, most probably in the National Football League (NFL). Initially, limited precautions
were adhered to by both players and stakeholders to mitigate the outcomes of the post-match
injuries. Contemporary discoveries of the interconnection between recurrent football head
injuries and chronic traumatic encephalopathy of retired professional footballers have led to
immense research and awareness on the long-term outcomes of concussions. The essay discusses
concussion controversies in football, the legal issues, and what could have been done to mitigate
the severity of concussion injury in the early stages.
The legal issues
Football players with head injuries could be sidelined for sometimes before returning to
play. Their return on the pitch was encountered by a more severe concussion injury. Their re-
injury developed complex and dynamic questions on the rules and regulations formulated by
sports and health agencies on discovery, diagnosis, and recovery. The events led to the creation
of a team composed of medical elites and sports experts to carry more research on the discovery
and diagnosis of concussion injury. It was discovered that athletes who sustain one concussion
are more likely to sustain another if they do not report their concussion symptoms. The second
injury can be highly severe which can result in a rare and deadly second impact syndrome.
It was recognized that most college players experience concussions every season. A
concussion is caused by head-to-head contact or head-to-ground impact. The collision causes the
