For a material to be classied as a mineral, there are four requirements that it must
have. The requirements state that a substance must be a naturally occurring solid,
formed by inorganic processes, with a characteristic crystal structure, and a specic
chemical composition. Each of these requirements must be present in order to be
classied as a mineral. The best ways to di$erentiate between minerals is to study
the luster, crystal form and habit, hardness, cleavage, density, and color and streak.
Each characteristic is essential for properly identifying minerals. Luster describes
how a mineral looks in the light, such as if it is shiny or dull. The crystal form and
habit of a mineral are the descriptions and shapes which also show what the
mineral will form in the future. Symmetry is also shown on the crystal forms, which
is also the crystal form and habit. Hardness is identied by the strength of the
bonds and crystal structure. If a mineral can endure scratches or other types of
abrasion, its hardness level is high. If not, the hardness is low. Cleavage refers to
the shapes of the mineral after it has been broken. If the shapes and structure of
the mineral is rough and uneven, it is a fracture. If the mineral has parallel planes
and is smooth, it has cleavage. The color and streak of a mineral is not the best way
to identify a mineral, however it may be used for some identication. Chemical
composition plays a factor in the color and streak as some elements create strong
color e$ects. Lastly, density how light or heavy a mineral is. Minerals that have a
high density have closely packed atoms, and minerals that have low density have
less closely packed atoms.
Rocks and minerals are not the same. Rocks are forms and structures of minerals
that are formed naturally and are composed together to form themselves. Minerals
are naturally formed chemical compounds that include atoms that form a certain
structure. Minerals have distinct properties to make it simple to identify one from
another.
