Nursing shortage is a global challenge facing the healthcare industry in all countries around the
globe. Factors that contribute to staff shortage are multifaceted and related to the structural
problems that affect the way healthcare organizations higher the nurses. This is related to the
reduced number of nurses being recruited in nursing institutions and the increased population
that is happening in all states of America (Kaur & Gujral, 2017). The outcome of this problem
has been attributed to many challenges in the practice that lead to reduced quality of the staff.
The challenge of increased staff shortage is also related to an aging population that requires more
resources to manage while at the same the increasing population needs that the country keeps on
witnessing (Maura, Havaei, & MacPhee, 2017). The effects of these shortages leads to an
increased nurse to patient ratio which makes the nurses to strain more when handling the number
of patients. This leads to nurse burnouts and increased number of working hours for patients thus
compromising the quality of care that patients receive. Nurses who work in constrained
environments find it difficult meeting patients’ needs while at the same time staying healthy.
This problem needs to be addressed in order to create quality outcomes for the patients and at the
same time ensuring that the nurses stay healthy at all times.
