I selected the Fourteenth Amendment. One of the reasons is the variety of rights protected by this
Amendment, and on the other hand, in its second section, this amendment is the first one to add the
word “male”. The Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution was proposed on June 13, 1866, and
ratified on July 28, 1868.
2. WHAT IS THE LIBERTY DEFINED IN THE AMENDMENT?

The fourteenth amendment firstly defines citizenship and then grants citizens several rights: the
privileges and immunities provided by US citizenship, liberty, life, and property, which cannot be
expropriated without due process of law, and equal protection of the laws.

4. WHAT IS THE LANDMARK CASE ABOUT?
This case was the first to use the right to privacy to protect the reproductive rights of women. Justice
William O. Douglas described all the facets of privacy as a single implicit right that appear in several
amendments and can be undoubtedly found in the Fourteenth Amendment and thus, birth control is
included in the privacy sphere.
