Deductive and Inductive Arguments
Consider the statement: "Traditional publishing has been rendered unnecessary by the rise of
digital publication."
Deductive argument
Either traditional publishing has been rendered unnecessary by the rise of digital publication
or the world rotates in a clockwise direction. The world does not rotate in a clockwise
direction. So traditional publishing has been rendered unnecessary by the rise of digital
publication.
Inductive Argument
Most authors nowadays use digital publication more than traditional publication. Most of the
information sources that we use can be easily found in the internet than through hard copy
means. Therefore, traditional publishing has probably been rendered unnecessary by the rise
of digital publishing.
Final Paragraph
The first type of argument is a deductive argument that is an example of a disjunctive
syllogism deductive argument. The second type of argument is an inductive argument that is
an example of generalization inductive argument. In my opinion, the type of argument that is
more effective in supporting a statement is the deductive argument. This is because the
premises that are used provide a definite guarantee that the conclusion is true. The world does
not rotate in a clockwise direction. So the conclusion is guaranteed to be true. The conclusion
of the inductive argument is probable and not a guarantee that it is true.
