LOGICAL OBSERVATION IDENTIFIERS NAMES and CODES 2
LOINC is an acronym that stands for Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes.
LOINC is a clinical vocabulary which entails a universal system widely used in the scope of
exchange of clinical health data using electronic means from diagnostic centers to other persons
and parties concerned. LONIC is often mapped onto UMLS, being used as a standard for metrics
used in laboratory observations tests are done and results obtained (McDonald, 2017).
Most diagnostic systems in the United States have implemented LONIC in delivering
laboratory and diagnostic results using electronic channels using HL7 messages to different
stakeholders and clients. This standard has obtained preference among different organizations as
the best fitting code set for lab tests for the purposes of exchange of clinical information among
different stakeholders. One of these organizations include HL7 Standards Development
Organization which has demonstrated their preference of LONIC as the most suitable code set for
the purposes of transferring information pertaining to laboratory test names between the federal
government, health institutions and also medical laboratories.
Such preferences could be attributed to the fact that LONIC code set demonstrates several
advantages over other code sets used for the same purpose. These advantages include their ability
to be mapped onto UMLS, an attribute which enhances effectiveness, LONIC code set contains
numerous genetic tests and the last being that LONIC code set is updates in terms of its
comprehensiveness (UMLS LOINC, 2017). This code set also enables automatic filing of
laboratory results obtained into their respective medical record slots for efficient and systematic
storage and retrieval of this information. Results are stores systematically in public health
databases and other research systems. This is achieved by the use of a mapping protocol that is
instrumental in mapping results obtained onto LONIC codes which will later on be essential in the
browsing of LONIC codes during clinical information retrieval.
