ATTRIBUTION THEORY AND DECISION MAKING 2
Attribution Theory and Decision Making
Human beings’ perception of themselves and others around them plays a significant role
in their decision making and their perception of reality. The attachment of reason and
explanation to their behavior and that of others is necessary in the examination of events and
drawing of conclusions. One theory that seeks to explain this phenomenon is the attribution
theory. This theory, however, is affected by other concepts such as consistency, consensus,
distinctiveness, fundamental attribution error, creative decision making, perceptions, bounded
reality, cognitive biases and conjunction fallacy. Each of these concepts is instrumental in the
decision-making process engaged by people in their daily lives. In discussing the concepts and
overall theory, the paper will be divided into four distinct sub headings namely decision-making,
attribution theory, personal experience and creative decision making. The primary aim of this
discussion is to formulate an analysis of how the attribution theory and bias explains human
behavior within organizations and industry. Rationale decision-making in an organization is
dependent on the attribution theory and the concepts surrounding it, and thus an understanding of
their role in decision-making processes assist in refining the process in organization.
Decision-Making
Sensible decisions are dependent on a series of factors which then means accuracy is
relative when two decisions are compared to each other. Biases are an element that affects
decision making in the organization and some of the concepts governing the process include
bounded reality, cognitive biases, and conjunction fallacy. All these biases affect the way in
which decisions are made and affect the way in which people arrive at casual explanations for
behavior. Cognitive biases include the halo effect, overconfidence, and anchoring. An
individual’s predispositions can either hinder or promote the decision-making process. However,
