Civil rights issues have had a dynamic change over the past years. Martin Luther King. Jr
epitomizes civil rights movement, and accounts as one of the greatest figures of change in
modern America. However, at the time of King, the main issue the civil rights movement pushed
was an end to racial segregation. However, modern day civil rights issues have changed.
Currently, civil rights issues range from women rights, gay rights, health care services rights and
others. However, what is the greatest major civil rights issue in current contemporary America?
In our discussion, we look at access to quality education and equal opportunities brought by
education across all racial lines as the major issue in modern civil rights movements.
Among the various issues in modern day, education is a key highlight. African
Americans and the Hispanic are among the various minority groups that more often have access
to poor education and opportunities brought by education. The issues are mainly between the
elementary and middle school levels of education. While there are some efforts made, for
instance, the voucher programs instituted in various urban areas to cater for the minority and
poor families, it has not been effective (Orfield). The program cannot reach out to all students
who really need the service. Moreover, the program scope is too small to accommodate the large
number of poor students that require the assistance.

While there is no denying that there has been significant growth in access to education
among the minority, we can agree that there is critical disparity in education opportunities
between students of poor backgrounds. In particular, taking the recent data on criminals in
prison, and their backgrounds the highest percentage of inmates are African Americans from
poor backgrounds. While their offenses range from petty crimes to violent crimes, most
individuals have, either not completed their education or simply did not manage to get any
opportunities after they completed their education. It is different however, to their white
counterparts; most are there for other issues and few for similar issues to those of African
Americans (Spring).
In another interesting fact is how many students are able to access college and
universities from the poor backgrounds (Orfield). It is sad to note that not many individuals have
managed to access scholarships for higher educations. Not all individuals are talented in
particular sports, and therefore have not been so lucky to access education up to the highest level
possible. Financial constraints are a major factor since not many families form the poor
backgrounds can afford to pay.
How relevant is education as a major civil rights issue in contemporary America? We
look back to Dr. Luther King message on economic inequality. Education is a critical component
of an individual that enables economic freedom. Ideally, education is an integral factor in
eradicating some of the various issues in the society. Current America accounts for about 15.1%
of population living below poverty line (Darling-Hammond). Moreover, minority accounts for
the greatest statistics of individual involved in various issues such as crime, and illegal
businesses such as drugs. If every child were able to access equal education, such statistics
