Harry S. Truman presidency was faced with numerous challenges in international
relations during his eight years tenure. Truman is famous for leading the United States through
three tough periods. The last stages of World War II, the Cold War, and the beginning of the
atomic age. Among his achievements as president, is the intervention of American troops in the
stalemate between North and South Korea and the initialization of the creation of Israel in the
Middle East. The essay will discuss Truman's foreign policies that became the principles and
guidelines that marked American foreign policy in the twentieth century and investigate how
Truman prepared the U.S. for the cold war.
The Cold War began during Truman's regime, and it came as a result of the President’s
believe that it was right to take action and restrain the expansionistic behavior of the Soviet
Union. The Truman Doctrine mandated the United States to a duty of supporting foes of
Communism anywhere in the globe. Truman was blamed for the U.S. defeat in the Korean War,
which led to a decline in popularity and support for his policies among the American citizens. In
the aftermath of the World War 2, the Truman government had to find a solution to the
deteriorating U.S.-Soviet relationship and the start of the Cold War. Towards the cold war, he
insisted on using the policy of containment to restrict the Soviet expansion and the growth of
communism. In 1947, he formulated the Truman Doctrine to offer aid to Greece and Turkey so
as to safeguard them from communist invasion. That same year, Truman crafted the Marshall
Plan, which contributed billions of dollars in the form of aid in a bid to start economic recovery
in the troubled European countries. Truman defended this strategy by suggesting that
communism would prosper in economically deprived areas. In 1948, the U.S. provided aid in the
form of food and medical supplies to the West of Berlin, Germany, that was invaded by the
