Plate tectonics are related to the formation of volcanoes because
when tectonic plates are moved across certain areas, the volcanic
plateau is moved into the direction of the plate. Soon after, a new
volcano starts to build over the same spot while the older spot
begins to cool. As plates move away from the hot spot, the
lithosphere cools o and subsides. Both subduction and divergent
margins form volcanoes. One of the most popular volcanoes in the
United States is Mount St. Helens in Washington State. This volcano
is active, and has erupted in 1980, which was also the deadliest,
destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States.
