Abstract
In more recent years science has taken a turn in current studies and focused more
attention on unknown substances within our world. One of these substances which recently has
skyrocketed in popularity is the psychedelic substance dimethyltryptamine. Dimethyltryptamine
or DMT is a chemical substance part of the indole alkaloid family; DMT is a psychoactive
psychedelic which has intense visual and auditory hallucinations and has been used for centuries
by cultures all around the world for “Spiritual awakening.” DMT is naturally produced in the
body in which the body also biosynthesizes the substance, however, this biosynthesis can be
further examined and preformed in a lab. Since so much is unknown about the substance science
is continuing research to answer unknown questions about the substance. Research began in the
early 1960’s, however, research is difficult due to the legality of the drug.
Introduction
Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a chemical substance in which is a naturally occurring
substance with in the bodies of mammals, and derivative of the tryptamine group.
Dimethyltryptamine is a schedule one psychedelic which can be ingested orally, smoked, or even
injected having effects similar to psylocibin, however, more intense.

Studies done in 1995 by Adolf Dittrich and Daniel Lamparter, using an injection of DMT
found that it was a conscious altering substance being strongly influenced by habitual factors
instead of situative factors (Wikipedia, 2013). Since the legality of DMT is still very crucial, the
ability for science to properly analyze the substance is limited, more is unknown than known
when it comes to dimethyltryptamine.
Chemical and Physical Properties
Dimethyltryptamine is hazardous when taken orally without an MAOI or an RIMA (these
are strong antidepressants) due to the metabolism of DMT. If the DMT is naturally metabolized
and digested the compound is considered toxic, however, the MAOI and RIMA act as
metabolistic blocks which stop the digestion process of the substance allowing for effects to take
place, in a safe and nontoxic matter. However, since DMT is toxic, the most common side effects
if taken are increased heartrate, increased blood pressure, chest pain or tightness, agitation,
dilated pupils, rapid rhythmic movements of the eyes, and possible dizziness. Also, negatively
effecting the serotonin neurotransmitter which can result in many medical issues such as
serotonin syndrome.
Dimethyltryptamine has a molecular weight of 188.27 g/mol; with a boiling point of 60-
80 degrees Celsius, and a melting point of 46 degrees Celsius. Most often DMT is in the form of
powder with an orange tint which is when the chemical substance is exposed to prolonged
amount of oxygen. However, it isn’t uncommon for the substance to be in crystalized form, or in
the root of many different types of plant species mixed with an MAOI or RIMA in a drink called
“ayahuasca.”
Chemical Reactions
While being part of the indole alkaloid family, DMT has many psychoactive effects. In
most plants the amino acid L-tryptophan is produced naturally, as well as most animals who
produce it as an amino acid coming from diet.
