According to the constitution, oaths are a must for most public officials before taking office; they
have to swear that they will uphold the constitution of the United States of America; this is called
the oath of the office. Oaths date back to the kings and princes rules in the middle ages; those
under the rule of the princes had to take an oath that will be loyal to the prince and his religions
or religious beliefs. Therefore if a prince was a catholic, then they would all follow suit and
become ones as well. Anyone at the time who was accepting public office also had to take an
oath of loyalty to the prince and the church. Anyone also who was testifying was supposed to
take an oath as a means of being compelled to tell the truth; atheists were in fact not allowed to
testify.
These beliefs and traditions were accepted in America and included in the formation of the
constitution. The constitution therefore stated that a person who was holding public office would
take an oath which signified his belief in God and commitment to uphold the law. This was so
regardless of the denomination of the person. Debate is raging on as to the necessity of the oaths
and as to why the public officials should be required to take public oaths that require them to
state their beliefs in God.
