Going global with the English Language
English is, undoubtedly, a universal language. It has made the world
smaller and countries closer to one another.
With the English language, we can keep abreast with the latest
information as well as the modern advancements in science and technology.
We can operate a computer, surf the internet, and travel around the world in
the comfort of our room. No wonder many people of different nationalities
learn the English language in order to keep pace with progress and global
competitiveness.
In the Philippines, teaching the English language starts as early
as pre-school. It continues in the elementary school and becomes more
complex in the high school up to college. The knowledge and skills in
English of our students are further enhanced as we teach them science and
mathematics.
Nowadays, however, it seems that our use of the English language is
deteriorating in quality. We speak in Taglish; that is, we speak in a
combination of Tagalog and English. Perhaps, this is the reason why the
highest official of the land, proposed that English should be restored as the
medium of instruction in all subjects, except in Filipino.
The English language today is the language of business, technology,
and global communication. A good command of the language can make us
globally competitive. Since we belong to a global village where all
countries are racing towards progress, we cannot afford to lag behind but
cope and go with the winds of change
