Your Business Analysis Career, Beyond Requirements:
Business Process Management and Business Intelligence
Maureen McVey IIBA, Head of Learning and Development
Maureen: Hello everyone and welcome to Your Business Analysis Career
presented by the International Institute of Business Analysis.
We’re going to talk about your career possibilities, getting beyond
requirements, what we do on a regular basis, to talk a little bit more
about process management and business intelligence. Very important
and up-and-coming career options for us as BAs.
I’m your host today and presenter, for a change, Maureen McVey. I’m the
Head of Learning and Development at IIBA. I’ve been a BA for many
years.
I have to say that my preference is the process side of things, but I think
there is some exciting stuff happening out there, in the industry, that will
challenge us, challenge our skills, but also up our game.
I think business analysis is maturing as a profession. It, certainly, is
moving beyond software requirements as a primary focus and projects
as a primary focus for us.
For those who are unfamiliar with IIBA, our vision and mission is to
build and develop the practice of business analysis, help you to develop
your skills and career.
We’re a not-for-profit organization and have over a hundred chapters
around the world, which are potentially local to you, as a resource for
more information about your BA career and business analysis practices.
We are a membership-based organization. We consider ourselves a
community contributing towards developing not only ourselves, but also
the organizations for which we work.
We do that through webinars, like this. We have an online library. I’m
going to walk you through some of these resources today, on our
website, as we walk through some information that, maybe, help you to
look at potentials for your career.

The idea of the webinar itself is really to talk about not only the role of
process analyst in business intelligence, decision analysts, business
analytics specialists, whatever you want to call these folks.
We’re going to talk a little about what they do and how they do it; what
are the skills and knowledge required for the role; and then, what you
might need to make the transition.
I want to be clear, though, that each person has their own background,
their own skills, they’re at different stages in their career. We’re really
going to talk about a generalized approach to looking at these roles for
your career and how you might be able to shift your focus to one of
these careers.
There isn’t one answer for everyone. Everyone’s different. We come
from different perspectives. I hope that I’ll be able to give you some
guidance and some information that will pique your interest and help
you to make some career decisions.
I’m cutting in and out, someone tells in me the question box. It seems as
though folks have mastered the question box. I’m going to try to set my
microphone up a little bit better, so that I’m not cutting in and out. It’s
because I’m turning my head, I think.
Let’s get started. I’m actually very excited about these two roles, for a
number of reasons. It builds on stuff we’re already doing, but it takes it
to that next level. It doesn’t mean that we abandon what we currently do
as BAs. At the foundation are the business analysis skills that we bring.
As we’re talking about these things, grab a piece of paper- piece of
paper,” you can tell how old I am- type in a few notes about what you
know in relation to the roles that we’re going to talk about today.
You may already be practicing some of this, at some level. You also may
bring some experience that is extremely important to these roles. We’ll
certainly talk about those and where you can get some more information
and develop your skill.
Someone asks, “Is there also data analysis and BA manager?” I’m not
going to talk about those so much, BA manager especially. I’m going to
focus an awful lot on these two roles.
I’m certainly going to talk a bit about business architecture, because this
is a logical progression. If I can fit in the BA management stuff, I will.
We’ll try to keep this as interactive as we possibly can, using this
technology that we have.
