Food and Culture
Introduction
Culture and food are broadly distinctly described as the beliefs, habits, customs, attitudes,
and values accepted by the community or individuals. The cultural behavior outlines get
reinforced when a group is secluded by the geographical location or segregation through
socioeconomic status. Food and culture are learned, not necessarily inherited by passing it from
generation to another generation. Food and culture are two interrelated factors in which the
human beings use food, as well as how food gets acquired, cooked or stored, how it is prepared,
served and to the people to serve, and lastly how it gets consumed (Kittler, Pamela & Kathryn).
When doing writing about food, it is hard justifying the culture that surrounds a particular dish.
This particular essay about food and culture finalizes on ways to appreciate and face the
challenges in the society while using food as a channel to interrogate a specific facet of culture
and contemporary another viewpoint on a powerful matter.
Images, Associations, and Memories that the Food Bring Back
Food has a very special meaning to our family, and I believe that my contemplation about
a flavor combination of the fresh mozzarella with sun-ripened tomatoes and basil, together olive
oil is a good foundation of my memorial images. These pictures steer me to remember and yearn
many dishes beyond the simple standard “Insalata Caprese,” the first Italian family meal I ate.
The dish holds some positive memories of how I spent my holiday in Italy’s coastal city, Capri; a

beautiful and historical island that serves as a destination for daily travelers, holidaymakers, and
celebrities. It has an enjoyable and amazing mountainous view, culture, and of course great food!
Capri is packed tight with phenomenal galore.
Beyond the numerous cultural attractions and nature, the sea is also in all its charm, Capri
inclusively offers some good shopping that includes some tasteful boutiques besides artisans'
studios that sell the “Made in Italy” goods and unique products alternate along the typical side
streets and the alleyways. Still remembering the salty water at the beach-side restaurant in
coastal Capri, I laugh to myself reminiscing the numerous and ridiculous combinations that exist
outside the capital of Italy. I also know that nobody with much understanding of the Italian food
would ever make a mixture of the great Italian Cuisine: “nettle-ricotta ravioli” with the
puttanesca sauce like my family and I tried in the holiday making. The Italian food reminds me
of how Italian view ethnicity, especially in Capri. Inside Italy, they see minorities and
immigrants as "ethnic groups." Other Italians consider their nation as one that is built on a multi-
ethnic foundation while others tend to view Italy as a distinct ethnic nation. In short, in their
2012 book Food and culture, Counihan, Carole, and Penny Van Esterik write much Italian fail to
address the issue the issue of the ethnic groups.
Sociological Variables
Conversely, I remember while taking my holiday at Capri, I remember I read one of the
local dailies that illustrated that following the differences in dialectal and folk culture, many
scholars in Italy offers different ethnic categorizations of Italians from diverse geographical
extents within Italy. According to Civitello publication Cuisine and Culture in 2011, Italians
claim that the dominant ethnic group in Italy is made of Italians, who account for 95 percent of
the total population while the remaining population comprises of ethnic groups like the
