Tuskegee Syphilis Study
Human rights ought to be observed in any research or experiment conducted when
humans are used as subjects. This is not what happened in the Tuskegee Syphilis study. It is easy
to point out some unethical practices in the study. Among the most important rights that were not
observed in the study is the lack of seeking consent from the group of African American men
that were involved. They were kept in the dark of the intentions of the research therefore
infringing on their rights to make decisions either to participate in the study or not. In addition,
there was a lot of lies that were propagated in the recruiting process making the study highly
unethical.
Another factor to consider that made the study unethical was the fact that aspects of
economic and social status was used in addition to racial lines to get the participants. Some of
these people then had not experienced dealing with professional doctors hence trusted them to
get the best service. Due to their status, they were also susceptible to manipulation that would
result from the study. Proper medical treatment was denied to the men without their knowledge
on the basis of conducting research by the government.
Through this research, it is worth noting that ethical codes of conduct are important in
ensuring medical trials and research are improved. Various stipulated laws ought to be followed
