Sociological imagination
There are public issues and personal troubles. Public issues are problems whose sources
lie within the social and cultural structure of the community. On the other hand, personal
problems are a range of social problems individuals suffer personally. Examples of such
problems individuals go through personally include; family problems, alcohol addiction,
unemployment and poor health. When one hear of these problems, it is easy to conclude that
these individuals suffer these problems alone and they are to be blamed for these problems. It is
important to note that sociology takes a different approach in understanding public and personal
problems through social imagination which by roots the problems to various aspects of the
society and not to entirely blaming the victims. Social imagination therefore, is the ability to
acknowledge structural basis of individual and public problems.
To fully understand the concept of sociological imagination, the social problem,
unemployment can be used. Sociological imagination can be used in understanding and solving
the problem of unemployment when the argument that many people in the society are
unemployed therefore it is not right to conclude that they are unemployed because they are lazy
is presented. The argument presents unemployment as a social issue with its roots in political and
economic structures of the society and therefore its solution can only be found by understanding
and explanation of lack of opportunities that has made many be to be out of work.
