1. Review an ethical dilemma you have faced in light of Kidder’s ethical checkpoints on
page 189 of the text. Did you skip any steps? Which step was most difficult and why?
The existing ethical dilemma in this case involves an editor of a renowned newspaper
trying to consider the consequences that would arise if he/she publishes a graphic photo of a
little girl with blood on her dress after her mother had died after being hit by a run-away car
when coming home from seeing off her father at the airport.
The first step was skipped, this step requires one to recognize that indeed there exists a
problem and would lead them to identify that a moral concern indeed exists. This first step
helps media personnel to make rightful decisions and discern what is morally incorrect.
Moreover, the third checkpoint was skipped which stipulates that one should gather relevant
facts about an issue in order for them to make a decision on what to be done.
The fourth and the eighth step were the hardest to be made because of the nature of the
existing dilemma. The fourth step which suggests that one should test for the Right-versus-
Wrong issues and it provides the following four tests that can be used to recognize the

wrong-versus-right moral temptation, they are: the legal test, the stench test, the front-page
test, and the Mom test. The stench test for example required that before publishing the
graphic photo on the newspaper, the editor was supposed to assess if he/she was acting in
accordance to his moral principle.
On the other hand, the eighth checkpoint which involves making the decision on an issue
is often challenging as seen in this case whereby the act of publishing the graphic photo
would demand that the publisher justify his/her decision to the public.
2. War continues in the Middle East. What role should the U.S. take regarding the current
conflict there? Use the steps of the SAD Formula (in attached presentation) to bring a
critical thinking element into your moral reasoning. Cite and reference at least two
sources in your initial response to this question.
The U.S. as one of the superpower nations in the world is so essential to the process of
bringing calm to the warring Middle East countries such as Iran, Iraq and Turkey. As a
nation; U.S. should abandon their own interest in this war prone countries and work out on
mechanisms to bring back calm. The following steps of SAD Formula are applicable as seen
below.
The first step involves the process of situation analysis which should involve the laying
out of facts concerning the unending war, through comparative analysis of the previous
revolutions in these countries, realize that indeed there exists both cultural and societal
differences between the people of Middle East that could be inciting war and finally establish
