It’s a beautiful day for grazing. Blue skies dotted with small, white bundles of clouds placed
perfectly over the majestic landscape strewn out before my eyes to see. Fields of green blow in
synchronization with the wind as that same force tassels my hair. I shift under the shady protection of a
makeshift tent, moving the halter strapped across my face ever so slightly. This could not be more
perfect oh, but it’s just about to get better.
The girl walks up. The same that I’d taken notice to since I could remember; the same warm face
greeting me like she had done so often before. She was beautiful. Freckles spotted her face; her hair,
curly and black, like mine, pulled back but a single wisp found its way to creep back onto her face;
crisp, blue eyes met mine in an embrace of the soul. Her voice was filled with a loving care that I could
not express in any way imaginable. The pure affection this one girl showed me is impossible to describe.
I loved her.
Which is exactly why there was something I had to tell her.
No one can understand how hard it is to tell this girl this person that I’d known all my life, this
person that was with me at every moment, good and bad partly because evolution has left me with no
ability to comprehend complex speech or to vocalize anything other than the occasional neigh or
whinny, and partly because I didn’t want to see her hurt.
The girl walked up to my side, placed her arms around me, and held me in the embrace that she
had done many a time before. It’s at this moment that I can feel the true connection we share, one of
which I have felt with no other person before. I can sense if something is wrong with her, and she can do
the same with me, but that’s where my problem lies. She knows that something is wrong, not just by her
speech, but by her body posture, the way she looks at me with two deep blue caring eyes.
