1. What events or historical forces contributed to the Boston busing crisis of the
mid-1970s? Name at least three, and briefly explain why you think each one was
a contributory cause of the Boston busing crisis.
Racial imbalance act- this legislation made illegal the separation of public schools in
Massachusetts. It stated that all racially imbalanced schools be desegregated or lose their
funding. The Boston public schools integration needed to take place before September 1966.
Garrity’s busing order- the courts rule on school busing required African-American
students is sent to largely white schools and white students be sent to large African-American
schools. This meant to attain more racial balance.
Anti-busing protestors attack on the attorney- Boston experienced constant fights, classes
boycott, and attack on public officials (Quigley, 2013).
2. Name three specific consequences of the Boston busing crisis
Boston public schools experienced a decline in overall and white enrolment. Predominantly
white schools are overcrowded while predominantly black schools are under-utilized.
Demographic changes where Boston encountered duration of white flight in 1970-1990
Boston’s institutions and leadership with kings’ emergence to prove the city was moving past
racial impulse.
