IDENTIFY THE EMOTION 2
Identify the Emotion
One of the aspects that stood out most for me when identifying the emotions is that we
can easily misinterpret the emotions based on the facial expressions. While undertaking the test I
easily misinterpreted love and happiness due to the facial expressions of the individuals shown.
The other aspect that stood out for me is how facial body parts can help us read emotions better.
For example, when one is embarrassed, they will place their hands on their face as a defense
mechanism.
From the test, I can conclude that matching emotions with facial expressions can be a
tough task. However, with better emotional intelligence, I realize that one can match emotions
better. For example, as I continued with the test I began reading emotions better since I knew
what to look for in the facial expressions. I can also conclude when one learns about the
movement of facial muscles around the chins, nose and mouth, they are able to read emotions
better.
Our assumptions are not always right when placing an emotion with a facial expression.
We make most of these assumptions instantly instead of taking time to study the facial muscles
and their movement so that we can interpret the emotions better. Indeed, Marchi and Newen
(2015) argue that human faces are a complex stimuli and variety of information conveyed makes
it difficult to interpret emotions. We therefore need to constantly develop our emotional
intelligence as a way of ensuring that we can match facial expressions better to emotions.
