Dehydration
Water is an essential nutrient for the body. Right up there with oxygen, water is
pertinent to allow the body to function properly on a daily. Water makes up nearly 60%
of the body’s mass in the average adult, and approximately 70% in toddlers and infants
(University of Phoenix, 2010). Without a proper amount of water maintained in the
human body, dehydration may occur, which has devastating effects on the body. For this
reason it is important for one to consume a proper amount of water daily to maintain a
proper level of hydration, thereby decreasing the chance of dehydration. Why is water so
vital to the human body? It is essential for the body to perform functions that most
people take for granted. Nearly every organ in the human body is dependent upon water
for its survival.
Water and oxygen are the two most important substances that allow the body to
operate. It is well-known that the body needs oxygen, and it is water that transports that
oxygen as well as other nutrients throughout the body via the blood stream. Water also
plays a role in ridding the body of wastes. Saliva, stomach acids, enzymes, and other
bodily fluids could not exist without the presents of water. This goes the same for the
extraction of wastes excreted from the body via urine and feces. Water softens
indigestible substances, like insoluble fibers, allowing content to pass through the
intestines easily, essentially preventing constipation. In addition to assisting with the
digestion process, water has many other uses.
Besides flushing toxins and wastes from the body, water is essential in regulating
body temperature. Water can maintain a constant temperature because of its ability to
gradually decrease or increase in temperature (University of Phoenix, 2010). The human
body maintains a constant temperature of approximately 98.6 degrees. This is
