Most police officers show implicit bias during the decision-making process,
especially when it comes to instances of arrests. This type of bias is the association people
make between stereotypes and groups of people about those groups. The behavior of most
police officers is influenced by automatic association. The common type of implicit bias in
policing is implicit racial biases. Other types of implicit biases are also seen in policing
(Correll 103). Implicit racial bias causes what is known as “racism without racist.”These are
manifested in the form of non-racial factors. Other types of implicit biases are in the form of
sexual, religion, attitude, education, and gender orientation. These types of biases distort the
perception of a police officer. It also distorts the manner which one will treat another person
or others. This can be in favor of or against a person or group of people.
One way through which department can help police officers reduce the biases above
is through training together with policy interventions. Research shows that it is possible to
unlearn and replace bias association with unbiased ones. Changing the context of interaction
can also help to do away with elements of implicit biases.
On the other hand, criminal justice can also help to overcome this issue of biases. This
is possible through raising awareness relating to implicit bias among officers and police
leaders. Another method is for the criminal justice system to transform the convention
between the community and police (Alpert 126). There should be a diverse workforce in the
