and the extent of his empire?
The ivory shown depicts a triumphant emperor. The piece has five ivory plaques

3. How is the mosaic of Justinian and His Attendants similar in its subject matter
to the frieze on the side of the Ara Pacis? They clearly differ in the material (one is
a mosaic while the other is a sculpted relief), but how do they differ in STYLE?
The major theme in the mosaic of Justinian and His Attendants is the authority of
the emperor. It places the emperor in the central position of the church and the power of
the administration and military. It uses a style similar to the Romanian mosaic. The style
used on the frieze on the side of the Ara Pacis uses the image of a crowd that symbolizes

the first one depicts authority and power of the emperor while the latter depicts
recognizable individuals including children.
4. What elements of the St. should Apollinaris/Transfiguration mosaic in the
church of Sant'Apollinare in Classe be read as symbols? And what do those
symbols mean?
Different elements are depicted from the music. One of the elements is sheep
marching toward Christ which symbolizes the apostles emerging from the doors of the
two holy cities Jerusalem and-and Bethlehemrespectively the Jewish and Gentile
churches. The other element is the jeweled cross which has Greek words that mean Jesus
Christ, Son of God the Savior. The Greek words symbolize the words used by Christ in
the Apocalypse to symbolize that he was the beginning and the end. The transfiguration
at the upper zone depicts the transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor. In this element,
Jesus is symbolically depicted as sheep, not a man but a great cross.
