Damage brought by the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami
Of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and Tsunami, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and
Thailand among other countries were affected. Of the countries, Thailand and Indonesia
registered the worst damage. In total, the tsunami and the earthquake affected over ten countries
causing overwhelming damages. The earthquake was the highest experienced in over five
decades registering a magnitude of around 9.2. To date, many people in these countries are yet to
recover from the damages caused. In this essay, we will consider the damages and deaths caused
by the incidence.
Towns and major cities on the coastline of the affected countries suffered most of the
damage. The countries were sent in total blackouts after major electricity lines were damaged.
Over 150,000 residents of Banda Aceh and Meulaboh in Indonesia lost electricity connection
with the towns still to be fully reconnected to date. (Hébert, 2015). Pertamina, the state-owned
oil and Natural Gas Corporation which had fuel storage facilities in the Indonesia coast was
completely destroyed.
Infrastructures such as roads, bridges, and railway network were destroyed by the
tsunami and earthquake. In Sri Lanka, the tsunami caused the worst railway disaster in the world

accounting for about 1600 deaths. In the coastal towns in Indonesia, the entire road network was
completely destroyed. The environment of the affected coastline suffered devastating effects.
Due to the damages caused by the oil industry and major chemicals based on the coastal towns,
water bodies were highly polluted. There was also a major destruction of ocean ecosystems such
as mangrove forests and coral reefs.
Economically, these countries suffered a great loss. The fishing industry in the coast of
these countries was completely destroyed. Tourism industry which at the time thrived in these
countries was completely destroyed with most of the hotels located along the coast suffering the
worst fate.
The 2004 tsunami had its worst effect on human lives. While most governments in the
affected area only released the figures of the dead, many people sustained lifetime injuries while
a lot more were displaced and left homeless. Of the dead, Indonesia suffered the most with
estimated figures standing between 250,000 to 280,000 (Hébert, 2015). Of these, many were
women and children of diverse ages. In Thailand, a total of 9,000 is estimated to have lost their
lives. In Sri Lanka, approximately 36,000 lost their lives while about 10,000 Indians died too.
Somalia, Maldives, Malaysia, Burma, Tanzania, and Bangladesh all accounted for about 500
deaths. Many bodies, especially in Indonesia, were never recovered. Most of the dead were
children below 14 years and the elderly above 55 years of age (Suppasri, 2015).
Considering these effects, it’s common to conclude that the affected countries suffered
irreparable losses. Despite people donating worldwide to help those affected, the lives lost and
injuries can never be brought back.
