Plato Symposium
The speakers in the Plato Symposium gave different theories and definition about love.
These theories tried to define what love is and how love has been considered in various contexts.
All speakers gave the right definition of love. However, some of the speakers gave a shallow
definition of love while others tried to correct their fellows in the way they define love in their
speech. The definition by Phaedrus is one of its kinds. He defines love as people’s action to
promote virtue in them. This is a perfect definition since love deals with the things that that
creates better existence with other people in the world. This is appealing to the theory since it
relates love to the people’s attributes that promote peaceful existence. However, it’s not
appalling to me when the theory considers love as a god.
The theory by Prussians is different from the first theory since it connects one person to
the other. Pausians considers love as the friendship existing between an elderly man and a young
boy. This can be considered as the moves many people make to extend their knowledge to the
younger generation in a way that promotes virtue. This does not appeal to many people since
Pausians defines love as the moral responsibilities of the elder people towards the young people
in ensuring the passing of responsibilities and knowledge to the young people. Therefore, I
consider this as a theory that does not clearly define the world love but a theory that explains
more about the moral responsibility of the elders to the young people in the society.

Theory by eryximachus suggests that love promotes order and moderation. I believe that
this theory does not focus more on the source of love and how love can be expressed instead of
defining the real meaning of love. Therefore, this is not appealing to me based on its main focus.
Ogathon gave a theory that related love with the attributes of love. He said that love is sensitive,
beautiful, wise and young. This does not give the real definition of love to the people but it gave
the attributes of love in the society today. Finally, Socrates gave a theory that gave love the
definition as inborn spirit that brings together the resources and poverty. This brings the desire to
have the attributes of love as defined by Ogathon. This definition is appealing since it does not
relate love to good or morals but it defines the innate feeling that sports the resource to acquire it.
This attracts people together without necessarily feeling bad about others.
My favorite theory of all theories as explained in the Symposium is the theory by
Socrates. This is because it considered the definition of all the words other speakers or
philosophers used to define and explain love. He compared the words with the gods which ended
up being a bias definition. Therefore, Socrates brought all these attributes into to a point of
concession. He considered that love cannot only be beautiful and good since love itself need
things that are good and beautiful. Socrates considered the communication from God to people
as spiritual. This indicated that love is not mortal but spiritual as god does to the people. The
philosopher defines love as the fruits of the resources and poverty. The desire to acquire
resources brings poverty to resources and when they come together, love is attained. This cannot
be something tangible but the result of some attributes.
Socrates considers beauty, wisdom, and sensitivity as some of the attributes that loving
situation desires. This, therefore, does not give the real definition of the word love but gives
some characteristics of love. This makes the definition better and appealing to me. It also
