Conduct research on fluid hydration products. Investigate and research product information
by going to the grocery store and using the internet.
Discuss your research and conclusions. Write a response to some of the following questions:
Are there stimulants in these drinks? What kind?
Could you make your own electrolyte drink? If so, how? (hint: consider lemons and
sea salt, do research)
Do the claims made by the manufacturer seem realistic considering what you have
learned.
What about soda? Consider the phosphorus content. The sugar or artificial
sweeteners. Evaluate the effects of soda on your body.
What do you think the best water product is and why?
Hint: Consider reviewing a product called “Ultima”, designed and used by Olympic athletes.
Answer:
Many people use fluid hydration products after an excessive work out. These products like Gatorade
have water, sugar, and salts to replenish the electrolytes lost due to sweating and exercise.
They don’t contain stimulants. They won’t give the person any boost of energy or improve the
mood, but the hydration drinks will only compensate for the electrolytes lost due to work out.
***
Stimulants are present in energy drinks like Powerhouse or Allsport. The energy drinks are mostly
consumed before a work out as they increase physical and mental stamina. The most common
stimulant in an energy drink is caffeine.
Caffeine stimulates the nervous system to its peak in 1 to 2 hours after consumption.
Energy drinks also have vitamins, amino acids, sugars, and a stimulant like ginseng. Ginseng is
believed to boost athletic performance. Another claim is that Ginseng may improve the consumer’s
mood. However the amount of Ginseng in energy drinks isn’t sufficient to offer any benefit.

We can make our own electrolyte drink. Here is the process:
We need water, lemon juice, and salt.
Ingredients:
1) Waterthis is the ingredient that will be in maximum amount in the drink. It will act as carrier of
the electrolytes. We must use cleanest water for maximum benefits of drink. For pure water, we can
simply boil the water. The best solution is to use distilled water that is obtained by condensing the
water vapour and using that as water. Distillation process removes most of the pollutants and
contaminants in water. We can also ask the water carrier if they provide distilled water.

2) SaltElectrolytes basically are salts. We can use table salt. Some salts also have potassium iodide
which is good for the body. Iodine is needed for development of body. Potassium works with sodium
to maintain a normal blood pressure.
3) Lemon juiceCitrus fruits like lemons are great for electrolytes. After a workout many
electrolytes are lost by the person, and they can be replenished by the minerals that are present in
lemons.
Sugars can also be added for flavour. Sugar is needed by all cells and organs of the body.
Amount:
1/4 cup of lemon juice
1 teaspoon of salt
1 litre of water
To make lemon juice we just need to mix the above ingredients in a vessel, stir for a few moments,
and then pour the drink in a jar, bottle, or glass. We may also add ice.

I believe the claims of hydration drinks are true. I work out and, after an excessive hour of sweating,
I feel restless. I mostly consume a glass of orange juice and that makes me feel relaxed.
***
Soda and Soft drinks have excessive phosphorous content. Phosphoric acid is used in carbonation
process (that is used to make drinks).
Phosphoric acid also gives the tangy flavour to the drink.
Effects of excessive phosphorous on health:
The human body has calciumphosphorous ratio as 50/50. Excessive phosphorous in body causes
calcium deficiency which may result in brittle bones.
Product
Phosphorus
12-ounce can of cola
40 mg(in form of Phosphoric acid)
Kidneys work hard to remove excess phosphorous from body. Too much phosphorous intake from
soft drinks can cause kidney damage. For people who have kidney disease, it can be harmful if they
consume large amounts of soda containing phosphoric acid.

The best water product is distilled water as it is purest. We can also use lemons or oranges to make
our own electrolyte at home.
