MANAGING CHANGE PROCESS 2
Lockheed Martin dual-roles splitting change process
Lockheed and Martin is one of the leading companies in the defense and tech
industries. Having been established in 1995 after a merger of two major companies at the
time, Lockheed Corporations and Martin Marietta, the company has gained a lot of command
in the industry and emerged as the biggest beneficiary of contracts from the United States
Government (Hoe, Madsen & Practising Law Institute, 2013).
Evaluation of the need for change
With the decline in the market that was experienced in the early 1990s, the merger of
Lockheed Corporations and Martin Marietta led to the establishment of a large corporation
whose ventures span across various countries around the world (Lockheed Martin, 2013). The
company has also gone further to emerge as among the leading beneficiaries of foreign
governments by winning tenders worth billions of dollars from foreign governments to supply
them with state-of-the-art defense and assault systems and equipment (Hoe, Madsen &
Practising Law Institute, 2011). Additionally, the company ventures in a wide range of
products that make its operations one of the most intensive to manage. In its current strategies,
some of the company’s top management officials hold dual roles. Despite the revenue of the
company rising in the past few years, it has been recording a decline in the asset value, profit,
and operating income and particularly between 2014 and 2016 (Lockheed Martin, 2016).
Although this decline has not been attributed directly to the dual-roles held by the top
management and particularly the CEO who doubles up as the board’s chair, this approach has
been shown to have detrimental effects that may go as high as a decline amounting to a
quarter of a company’s five-year performance (Olson, 2013). In fact, companies such as
Cisco, Starbucks, and Visa, among others, and that apply the split roles of the two personnel,
have been recording positive returns in the past few years.
