LEADERSHIP IN THE 21
ST
CENTURY 2
There are numerous changes that are taking place in our world today as a result of
globalization and rapid growth in technology. Because of these changes, leadership in the 21st
Century is not what it was decades ago. There are shifts from traditional ways of leadership and
leaders must embrace these changes if their companies are to remain relevant in this day and age.
Leading in this ever changing age requires diversification in company strategies. Markets are no
longer concentrated in one region or continent; they have become diversified, going beyond the
borders of their home countries (Barton, Grant, & Horn, 2012). There is, therefore, a need to
tailor a company's strategies to fit the differences in culture and preferences among different
groups of people. A leader must know how to respond to external crises which he has no control
over but are nevertheless affecting their company. He or she has to learn to adapt their strategy to
the external environment. To do this, they must respond quickly to changes and embrace
decentralized decision making where employees in other countries are allowed to make an
informed decision on courses of action without waiting for instruction from the headquarters.
Leaders must strive to strike a balance in terms of work and their personal life. Dan
Vasella stresses the importance of this saying that, "You have to be able to switch on and switch
off, you need to have a moment when you say, "I'm home now," and work is gone". Growth and
personal development are important to the individual just as it is to the firm (Barton, Grant, &
Horn, 2012). It is crucial to keep your physical body healthy by maintaining a healthy lifestyle;
eating well, sleeping and exercising regularly. Josef Ackermann of the Deutsche Bank states that'
"If you're unable to relax quickly, I think you can't be a CEO for a considerable length of time".
Maintaining good emotional relationships with people outside the workplace is an effective way
of managing stress, people you can open up to about your fears and pressures.
