Different strategies have been used to manage and control diseases in the world. Some
of these methods are preventive and curative or involve treatment of some kind. These
methods have been used in different degrees for a long time now. This is no different for
sexually transmitted infections, which when combined, take a whole lot of resources to manage.
In the management of diseases, different health organizations and governments have to adopt
the most efficient and effective method of doing and i think it would be safe to say that
prevention would be better than waiting to treat and far much better than refering the patient.
In this essay i will try to explain and expand more on why prevention of the transmission of
sexually transmitted infections is better than the other methods of disease management,
specifically treatment and diagnosis. In short, I believe that the prevention of the transmission
of Sexually transmitted infections will create a healthy people, be it at school, home, work and
the whole community at large. This in turn will ensure there is an abundance of productive and
lively people.
It is because of one simple reason, prevention of sexually transmitted infections is the
best strategy that can be used in the management of sexually transmitted infections. The
reason is that preventative measures will go a long way in reducing the incidence and
prevalence of sexually transmitted infections in general. What this means is that the number of

new reported cases and those living with the disease will greatly reduce as the population
exposed to the diseases will have been reduced. Effective implementation of prevention
strategies will ensure that the population at risk take the necessary precautions at ensuring
their safety. This in turn will guarantee a relatively disease free and healthy community and like
i said before, a healthy community is a productive community.
The transmission of HIV has always been associated with the transmission of sexually
transmitted infections, be it at the same time or later in the disease process of the sexually
transmitted infections. Some of the preventive strategies adopted to control sexually
transmitted infections also prevent the transmission of HIV in the same way. These strategies
include avoiding risky sexual behaviour, abstinence and using protection among others. Lesions
in the genitalia that result from sexually transmitted infections increase the chances of
contracting HIV by a very big margin. This is particularly true for ulcerative sexually transmitted
infections such as syphilis and chancroid as there is direct exposure of tissue to the HIV virus.
As a result, the removal of these co-factors by reducing the overall prevalence of sexually
transmitted infections will ultimately reduce the efficiency of HIV transmission. The screening
of sexually transmitted infections will also offer an opportunity for HIV screening, through
phenomenon known as second generation HIV surveillance. This will ensure unidentified cases
of HIV are detected early and put on treatment. This will not only result in better treatment
outcomes but also reduced transmission as result of awareness.
Sexually transmitted infections come with a lot of complications that if left unchecked,
could have detrimental effects on the patient's life. These complications include infertility and
