CHAPTER 1
Introduction
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Pregnancy is one of the most vital and special moments of a woman’s life. It is one of the
distinctive traits that differentiate a woman from a man, though both play a big role in the event.
Pregnancy is associated with happiness and joy in the family as it completes the missing the
character in the formation of a new family or filling another space in the family. But often times,
this thing is associated with a lot of issues, including its effect on the population growth and the
desire of achieving the pregnancy.
Pregnancy or cyesis is defined as the physical condition of a woman carrying an offspring
inside her body from fertilization to childbirth. Although pregnancy is considered a normal
process, it is often a critical time for both the woman and her baby including the family and other
support groups as the changes it may bring to everyone would need special intervention. The baby
will make use of the woman’s body for its growth and development for 9 months until the right
time that it will be mature enough to survive the extra uterine life and live as an individual and in
this span of time, the future mother would have to undergo changes in her body and changes in her
way of life. This give rise to the establishment of prenatal care.
Prenatal care is defined as a series of health checks of a mother and her growing fetus from
the time the pregnancy was discovered until the time prior the woman goes into labor and
childbirth. It is performed by a health professional, particularly a specialized physician or an

obstetrician gynecologist. But before doctors were given the authority to perform this routine,
history and even the Bible mentioned that midwives were the experts in attending to nativity.
Midwives are trained and specialized professionals that can assist in childbirth and offer support
and advice to pregnant women. In the Philippines, the midwives are the people who render service
to pregnant women in both hospitals and health and birthing clinics in the absence of the
physicians, making them next in the priority from the doctors, and nurses, the last. Prenatal care
involves activities and tests that are necessary to check for the well being of the mother and the
child.
Prenatal care is necessary as it detects factors that may be cause feto maternal detriment.
The National Statistics Office (2010) revealed a dreadful result on the National Maternal Mortality
Rate of 170/100000 pregnancies from 136/100000 in 1995 (Palaganas, 2008) with normal delivery
and other complications related to pregnancy, occurring in the course of labor, delivery, and
puerperium as the leading cause of death (DOH.gov). All of these are controllable only if the
woman and the health care provider would believe and follow the routines in the prenatal
assessment religiously and critically. In prenatal assessment, foreseeable troubles can be detected
that may cause a big problem on the succeeding weeks of pregnancy and even on the actual birth
process and the postpartum time. Examples of these foreseeable problems are the signs that may
be indicative of pregnancy induced hypertension and gestational diabetes mellitus, chronic
illnesses like respiratory problems and heart or cardiovascular diseases, renal problems, and even
the congenital anatomical deviations in the woman (i.e. size and shape of the pelvis and woman’s
height) which may affect the uteroplacental sufficiency and may cause dilemmas in the childbirth
time. Another example of these are the woman’s lifestyle that may affect her pregnancy like the
type of work she’s engaged, smoking, alcoholism, drugs, and improper nutrition. Even the age
may predispose a woman to some dreadful problems. It’s in the prenatal assessment also that
problems in the fetus are being detected, thus, both the mother and the baby are being evaluated
well.
