Week 5 Apply: Backup Policies
Disasters happen to all organizations and businesses. In today’s business world, often it
is when will disaster strike, not if. It is important to be prepared for all the possible types of
disasters that can hit a company. Malicious attacks are not the only type of attack a business
must prepare for. Natural disasters that wipe out servers, human error that accidentally deletes
key information, weak passwords that get compromised, lost, or stolen devices, and negligent
employees are all possible vectors to a company needing to recover their data. It is crucial to
have a plan in place to recover lost data in a timely manner.
There are many different tools, programs, and software that a company can use to
backup their data. Some common programs to use are a cloud management platform like Rubrik
or Veeam, or a program like Acronis that ranges from simple backups on a workstation to
application-based backups in servers. The basic rule for business data protection is that if losing
the data will interfere with doing business, back it up. It is important to keep a few key
principles in mind when backing up data. First, one must backup business data regularly.
Secondly, it is important to keep backups on and off site. The best policy for backup data is
typically known as a 3-2-1 policy. This is defined as having three copies of your data, one copy
of the original data and two backups. The original file and one set of backup data can be at the
same location, but they must be on two different medias. Furthermore, this means that one set of
data must be offsite. This would ensure that a fire, theft, or malware will not be able to wipe out
all three sets of data. Typically, the third set is stored in cloud storage, sometimes on a different
continent.
