Compare and contrast German and Italian unification process
The continued rise of nationalism in Italy and German was opposed by many established
entities and the unification of these two countries was inevitable after long experiences of
disunity and disorganization. The strong and able leadership in the long run helped to unite these
two countries. (Jakob & Marc 1996)
German was composed of a group of states which were disunited; these states were largely
Austria and Prussia. The rivalry between these two states was immense; however the unification
of German was due to Prussian economic and military powers. Bismarck was mainly the huge
factor of German unification. After this unification German emerged very strong.
Italy’s unification was mainly contributed by Camillo Cavour who was a highly ranked
leader in Sardinia. He provided troops to fight in the Crimean war. All holdings of Austria in
Italy had to be taken down. Austria attacked Italy and was unfortunately defeated by Italy and
France troops. On defeat Austria went home to ask for military support from Prussia so as to take
over Venetia. After the end of the Franco-Prussian war, Italy emerged united together and
claimed the whole land of Italy. (Fichte & Johann 1808)
Both countries’ unification process was strengthened by the nationalistic spirit. All social
classes in German supported this led by their leader Bismarck. However, Italy’s unification was

due to contribution of the commoners, their support made it possible to unify the people in the
two countries. (James 1989)
