SCI 230 Week 2 Day 4 Assignment: DQ 2
Describe two similarities and two differences between eukaryotic cells and
prokaryotic cells. Why do you think eukaryotic cells developed? Describe how
eukaryotic cells are similar to a production line
Both Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes have a plasma membrane. This plasma membrane acts as a
barrier between what is inside a cell and what is outside. It chooses what to let inside.
Both Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes have cytoplasm/cytosol. This is made up mostly of water
and forms the liquid inside of a cell. This is where cellular activity happens.
Some Prokaryote cells have a capsule. This capsule forms a layer of protection for the cell. It
can also give a Prokaryote cell certain characteristics. Eukaryote cells do not have a capsule.
Eukaryote cells have mitochondria. These are the energy organelles of the cell. This is where
most of the energy reactions of a Eukaryote cell occur. Prokaryote cells do not have
mitochondria.
Eukaryote cells developed from Prokaryote cells through the evolution of multi celled
organisms needing more complex functions.
Eukaryote cells are similar to a production line because there are different stages of organelles
in the cell which at to carry out different, yet specific functions much as a production line does.
