DISCUSSION QUESTION TWO 2
Is reading a new article a bottom-up or top-down process? Provide opinion and
justification for your response
There are two methods for understanding the perception process which is top-down
processing and the bottom-up processing. Reading a new article can be classified as a top-down
processing which can be described as the development of pattern recognition by applying
contextual information, due to several facts. At first, when one is presented with a new article it
becomes easier to recognize what the author is trying to deliver if you read the entire article
rather than reading the words in discretely. The brain manages to identify and understand the
essence of the entire article because of the context that is provided by all the words in the article.
The top-down processing involved in reading a new article is conceptually driven
because the reader’s perceptions are influenced by the other words existing in the text. In some
cases, a reader may be aware of such influences, but on other occasions, the process takes place
without conscious awareness. For example, when reading the article, some words may be
misspelled or rather missing, but one is still able to read and comprehend the whole article. This
is because the reader uses the top-down processing and depends on other words that are in the
article to make an appropriate guess of what the misspelled or missing words could try to mean.
The context in which a word is perceived influences the top-down processing since it affects how
a reader may understand the new article. For example, if the article was related to food and
nutrition, one might interpret an ambiguous word as something related to food.
