Singing in the Rain is a romantic musical comedy released in 1952. The film follows
the lives of film stars Don Lockwood, Kathy Selden, and Lina Seldon as they struggle with fame,
power, love, and changes that come with the transition from silent to talking movies. Some of the
most prominent themes in the film include technological advancements, romantic love, and the
interplay between power and fame.
Technology change is a prevalent theme throughout the film. The movie industry in the
1920s was characterized by the transition from silent to talking films in the 1920s era. The film
shows how talkies revolutionized the movie industry, and how they drove other genres out of
competition. The movie also shows the impact of change on different characters, including Don,
Kathy, and several others who adapted to the changing technologies. The film also examines the
uncertainty that comes with change. Don fears that his career will be over once the studio started
discussing talking pictures. He states that talking pictures that mean I’m out of a job. At last I

films made Don more famous.
The romantic love between Kathy and Don is another important theme in the movie.
Singing in the Rain shows what romantic love should be like, as opposed to the illusionary
love that exists between Don and Lina. In contrast, Don experiences real romantic feelings for
Kathy, and he values her support over power and fame. When they first meet, Don tells Kathy
that “people think we lead lives of glamour and romance but we’re really lonely (Kelly, 1952).
Therefore, Don is willing to prioritize love over fame.
