Taoism emerged in during the Han Dynasty (c. 200 B.C.E.) from the ‘Old Master’ Lao-
tzu. The views presented by Laozi and Anselm the greatest of Christian thinkers point towards a
similar conclusion but address the issue of God and Sacred Power in different ways. The
contexts of the two perspectives on God and Sacred Power differ. Daoism, for instance, was
associated with the Han Dynasty and the stream of thought identified as Huanglao Dao or the
Yellow Emperor-Laozi Dao (Miller, 2003). Saint Anselm, on the other hand, lived during the

century and his thoughts developed the Ontological Argument. Although Laozi and Anselm
address the issue of Sacred Power in different contexts and languages, their conclusions agree on
the existence of God as a supreme being.
The languages used by the two philosophers have some similarities and differences as
well. The ontological argument shows a deductive approach resulting from a series of
conclusions. Lao-tzu also approaches his conclusion through the idea of deducing from the
experiences of nature and logical approach to the existence of God and Sacred Power in nature.
The language of Lao-tzu is different from that of Anselm in the approach taken to validate the
conclusions that he makes. Daoism uses immortals to explain various points in the concept of
God. Anselm, on the other hand, uses derivation in his language to validate the existence of God
(Smith, 2014).
The concept of God as applied in Daoism and Anselm also shows different ways of
thinking. The school of thought defined by Dao is the approach to all matters of religion and
others using the code of principles defined as befitting to a true believer. Anselm uses an
approach that is strictly religious and seeks to explain his findings through religion. While
Anselm focused on the matters of religion, Lao-tzu divided his attention to various aspects of the
