Fee-for-Service Plans and Managed Care Plans
There are various differences and similarities that exist between the principles of how
the Fee-for-Service plan works and how the Managed Care plan works. To start with, with the
Fee-for-Service, a patient can go see any physician that he or she wants. However, under the
managed care plan, one is only allowed to see the physicians who have an affiliation with the
plan (Feldstein 110). This comes with a strong financial incentive.
The next difference that exists between the two is that one can see any specialist
whenever you like, even though some practitioners prefer when referrals are done by the general
practitioners. For the managed care plan, a patient is referred to a specialist only if the primary
physician determines it as being very necessary. In addition, the patient under the Fee-for-
Service plan has the responsibility of checking the qualifications of physicians as well as
ensuring that one gets appropriate treatment once under the care of a physician (Penner 129).
This differs with the principle held by the Managed Care Plan whereby the plan takes the
responsibility of finding out whether the doctors who join their networks are qualified for the
safety of the patients under the plan.

In addition to the above, the two plans differ in that for the Fee-for-Service plan, the
patient is responsible for finding a physician whom one feels provides good care to them. Any
insurance plans that one may have are only limited to the payment of the claims made. The
Managed Care Plan, on the other hand, participate actively in soliciting for patients’ opinions on
the quality of care they have been given. This is done through the use of customer-satisfaction
surveys Erwin, (Paul, Ross, Keck, and Scutchfield 180). The similarity that exists between the
two plans is that the patient is the one who covers the cost of treatment, the only difference
comes in the method of payment.
