What I Read About
I read chapter 5 about the stages in which the role of the intern changes. The chapter reveals
that the roles of the intern change through four stages: initial entry, probationary period, productive
worker, and termination. According to Gordon & McBride (2011), understanding these stages
helps students understand their experience and predict the changes that will occur. Anticipatory
socialization occurs before a student begins an internship. It's the first stage, and it involves various
activities that a person undertakes before entering the organization to know more about it. A
student often forms expectations about the organization and his/her role.
The initial entry stage lasts for days or weeks, depending on the intern's orientation and
time that a person spends in the organization. The two common feelings for interns include
excitement and apprehension. These feelings reflect a student's concerns about how the staff will
perceive them and his/her ability to perform duties accordingly. After knowing the staff and roles,
the student enters the probationary period and is no longer considered a visitor or an outsider.
Eventually, the student separates from the staff and clients in the termination stage. The student
reflects his/her experience, assesses themselves, and determines the next stage of their career.
Subject Matter
The subject matter was the stages that a student undergoes throughout the internship.
Students have specific expectations of the internship. However, some of the expectations might
not align with the organization’s values and workplace policy might. Students may feel frustrated
when the organization fails to accommodate their expectations. In this regard, understanding the
stages that a student undergoes during the internship helps eliminate the frustration. For example,
the student understands that sometimes organizations fail to meet students’ expectations.
