Introduction
George W Bush entry into power did not promise anything much; he had no clear plan
for his administration. It would also be a period where America would be reminded of the
Vietnam War period with the entry of Americans into war this time in the Middle-East. The
September 11 attacks showed the American people that they too were vulnerable and Bush
played to their fears leading America to fight terrorism.
George W Bush followed in the footsteps of his father, starting off in the military then
Yale before finally entering into the oil business and finally into politics. The September 11
terrorist attack on American soil was a pivotal moment in Bush’s administration; many lives had
been lost in the twin tower collapse and subsequent attack on the Pentagon. The President termed
it an act of war and swiftly sent the military to Afghanistan where the terrorist were receiving
training under the protection of the Taliban. He later on singled out Iraq, Iran and North Korea as
terrorist hubs and countries that had the potential of attacking the American citizens.
Back at home the economy boom had fainted, Bush pushed for tax cuts through Congress
that would see $1.35 trillion dollars of cuts for a period of 10years. The war years had spent
much of the countries federal budget surplus that he had inherited from the previous
administration. The 2004 elections were in his favor driven by his tough stand following the
terrorist attacks. He went on to defeat the Kerry camp garnering 52% percent of the votes with
