ABSTRACT FROM THE ARTICLE 2
The Work of Management: A Daily Path to Sustainable Improvement
Summary
The author, Jim Lancaster, tells of an inspiring story in two dimensions. First, its a close-
up on his personal leadership transformation. Secondly, it is a comprehensive, real business case
analysis of Lantech’s lean transformative phases. Lancaster reveals why Lantech, a stellar lead
performer for years, grappled over time to maintain profit and enhance financial performance.
Lancaster (2017) further declares that 60 to 90 minute’s frontline on daily managerial activities
are essential in sustaining and expanding business. Everyday management requires a change in
managers’ thoughts and actions from judging people on results to having discussions and
motivating people at a lower level so as to meet objectives. Moreover, the author narrates how
daily management plus sustainable continuous perfection leads to an incredibly positive impact
on the end product.
Lancaster is keen to mention what happens in daily struggles where participants assess
how good they are maintaining profits and how to continue doing well. The need to practice the
lean leadership spirit where managers act like coaches by engaging team members in problem-
solving is well emphasized. Also, Lancaster mentions that all spheres of Lantech are integrated
for the efficient running of activities (Lancaster, 2017). Finally, the firm hugely invests in the
daily training of its employees.
Reaction
I view the book as a great inspiration to any CEO or person willing to set on a journey to
establish his firm and maintain gains. I honestly believe that the book presents a formula to
sustainable improvement and anyone can use it to transform themselves positively. The authors
begin narrating how the company tried to grapple with sales and improve financial performance.
