Factors that contributed to the emergence of private prisons
Following the fight on drugs under the reign of President Reagan, the public prisons were
overwhelmed with prisoners, which pushed the need for private prisons. The aim was to reduce
the high population of inmates that had crowded the prisons hence creating the market for
privatization of some incarceration centers to reduce the burden that had befallen the public
hospitals. The market for private prisons came after the civilization in which the state justified
the move citing the high cost associated with running the prisons. The state could not support the
high cost of running the prisons and therefore had to turn to private institutions to reduce the cost
of running the public prisons (Austin & Coventry, 2001). Private prisons are said to be of low
costs and can easily manage the population of the prisoners. As such, the private prisons market
has grown to support the state's needs in handling many prisoners while reducing the cost of
operations.
Relationship between politics, ideology and private prisons
A strong relationship exists between private prisons, ideology, and politics. For instance,
the increased emergence of private prisons has gained political interest where some of the
political groups continue to gain interests in the privatization of the prisons. The growth of
private prisons since the 1980s has attracted political criticism where the private prisons are
blamed for failing to reduce recidivism. Research indicates that the increasing demand for
private prisons attracts powerful and new political interests among policymakers (Burkhardt,
2019). Some of the criticism states that private prisons require high capital to run and therefore
not of necessity to the states. However, other ideological reasoning states that private prisons are
