The Impact Covid-19 Has on the Homeless and Housing Insecure Communities in Florida
Background of the study
For the first time in history, the United States declared a disaster in all 50 states in 2019
because of COVID-19, an infectious disease caused by the coronavirus. The virus resulted in a
global pandemic, thus a public health emergency (Benavides & Nukpezah, 2020). In June 2020,
the United States had recorded 2.7 million infections and more than 128,000 deaths (Benavides
& Nukpezah, 2020). To minimize the spread of the virus, measures such as lockdowns, social
distancing, curfews, use of sanitizers, among others, were put in place. Eventually, the pandemic
resulted in political, social, and economic turmoil for the global economy with severe
consequences for businesses and households. Due to the measures put in place, the consequences
to the citizens included increased poverty and unemployment.
These challenges are deeply embedded among the homeless who were initially facing
public health difficulties. The homeless (especially those incarcerated) need employment and
financial resources to be reintegrated back into society. Still, the effect the pandemic had on the
economy made it more difficult for them. Things worsened for the homeless because the
pandemic was a health issue, and they had already been experiencing health issues due to
homelessness. Since the pandemic advocated for social distancing, the homeless were at a
disadvantage whether on the streets or in shelters since social distancing is a problem. The
COVID-19 pandemic can thus be argued to have increased homelessness and worsened the home
situation of other families (Finnigan, 2020). Observations across the United States resulted in the
conclusion that shelters were still packed with no social distancing since the homeless had
nowhere to go even after the executive orders.
