DISCUSSION ABOUT ZIKA VIRUS 2
How would you talk to your family and friend about the morbidity and mortality issues
associated with Zika? Highlight issues related to you and your friend’s sex (male or
female).
I would begin by informing my family and friends that Zika is a disease caused by a virus
transmitted by mosquitoes. The mosquito that transmits the Zika virus belongs to Aedes genus.
As the primary transmitter of Zika Virus, the Aedes mosquito is usually active during the day,
late afternoon/evening and early morning hours (WHO, 2017). Another mode of transmission of
the virus is through sexual intercourse which is risky for pregnant mothers since the virus might
be passed to their fetus. Blood transfusion is another way through which the virus might be
spread even though this is more theoretical than practical. There is a strong link between Zika
virus and birth defect and congenital brain abnormalities. Research also indicates that that the
Zika virus is responsible for triggering Guillaine-Barre syndrome (Shors, 2017). . The disease
has no cure or treatment only symptoms are treated. Even though it is not fatal, it can cause
infant death.
Zika virus affects both men and women. However, pregnant mothers are at a bigger risk
of passing the virus to their unborn child. It is, therefore, paramount for both sexes to abstain
from sexual activities if they are exposed to the virus or use a condom when having sex. When
traveling to regions which are known to have active transmission of the virus both men and
women should seek information about how Zika virus can be transmitted sexually (Tharpe, et al.
2017). Women need counseling about emergency contraceptive methods that can keep them
from getting pregnant in order to prevent adverse fetal outcomes. All in all, both sex needs to
practice safe sex.
