Response:
Gender stereotyping has harmed society in many ways. While this discussion
will focus on how stereotyping has harmed women, gender stereotyping also affects
men, too, as well as non-gender conforming individuals, or those who are gender
conforming but may have a different sexual orientation (like a female lesbian who
identifies as a woman but views herself as masculine). From the video, however, I
would say that gender stereotyping has typically affected women in modern America by
making them feel incapable and by making them feel like they must be pretty and
obsessed with appearances. In several of the commercials, women are depicted as
incapable, like in the second commercial where the woman is depicted as in danger
driving down the road just because she is a female. Women are also depicted as
shallow, like in the commercial where the women are fighting over purses.
These types of gender stereotyping have had real effects on society. For myself,
I have never enjoyed dressing up and wearing a lot of jewelry or wearing makeup. I
have always dressed nicely, but I dont enjoy the task of thinking about clothing and
what to wear, and I certainly dont enjoy going through the ritual of putting on makeup
every day. Growing up, this always made me feel isolated from other girls as I couldnt
relate. As children, we want to fit in, and the other girls always made me feel like I was
awkward and not socially part of their circle because I did not have the some interests in
clothing and makeup. Even as a child, however, I knew that while some girls may have
had a genuine interest in these things, most of them were only interested in them
because it made them feel like they fit in, and that society wanted them to act a certain
way. As an adult, I feel like not being into these things has harmed my career more
than once. I know I mentioned already that I have always dressed nicely, but not being
into fashion or make-up certainly sets me apart from my colleagues. Interestingly, I
have felt more gender stereotyping from my female bosses than from male bosses.
The male bosses seem to accept that I’m not into those things and move on. The
female bosses, having been also told that they must conform, see me as strange or as
